managing overwhelm: a simple yet powerful reset

If you’ve ever felt like you were stuck in a hamster wheel, overwhelmed by an endless to-do list, and unsure of where to start, you’re not alone. In my first podcast episode, I walked through my own experience with overwhelm and how I reset my mind and body. Today, I want to share that with you in the hope that it brings you value.
Recognizing Overwhelm
We all experience moments when our minds feel like a cyclone, spinning out of control with thoughts, responsibilities, and pressures. For me, it hit while I was preparing food in my kitchen. I found myself rushing from one task to another, unable to focus, and completely caught up in the sheer amount of things I needed—and wanted—to do. These weren’t external problems beyond my control; they were all self-imposed goals and expectations. And yet, the overwhelm was real, affecting both my mind and body.
The Power of Movement
In that moment, I made a decision: instead of forcing myself to power through, I stepped outside. I chose to move my body before even eating because I knew I needed a reset. As I stood in the English countryside, feeling the sun on my skin, hearing birds chirping, and experiencing the fresh air, I felt the overwhelm begin to subside. The simple act of moving my body took me out of my head and back into the present moment.
How to Manage Overwhelm in the Moment
If you find yourself spiraling in overwhelm, whether it’s due to an overflowing to-do list, a high-stakes presentation at work, or simply the weight of daily life, here’s what I recommend:
pause and step away – when your mind is racing, trying to push through often makes things worse. Take a break, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
move your body – whether it’s a walk, stretching, or dancing in your living room, movement helps reset your nervous system and brings you back into balance.
control the controllables – focus on what you can manage in the moment. Often, we get overwhelmed by the big picture when all we need is to take the next small step.
be mindful of your mental state – recognize when you’ve been stuck in your head for too long and actively shift your energy through movement and breath.
